A thought I had was for the reader to not know quite so soon that Asanka is a student, so the discovery of the books etc. comes as the denouement. It might just take the form of someone else following him to the cafe, in fear and wrestling with himself or herself whether to do anything, seeing each action of Asanka's confirming the fears, until Asanka opens his backpack and produces - textbooks.

Cheers

I think you are right, it needs a little more punch. But I was consciously trying to make a bit of an homage to those participating in the National Novel Writing Month, which is the event which inspired Becky Raymond to set up the Flash Fiction Project.

Hi David

Possibly your best of the lot. Though perhaps the ending needs a little something.

Cheers

Ha, short but (anti)sweet. I was a little suspicious at the sound of the black fur-trimmed coat, I will admit that my mind drifted to darker possibilities (as it often does...) but I grinned at the outcome, what a great idea!

I also remembered growing up in a house that had a chimney but no fireplace. I had always assumed that Santa somehow magically slipped in through the furnace and crawled out like a slug before getting burned to death. I was a strange child...

WOW. This is good. I was curious as to what stories would grow from this picture. I like yours! You've done a great job of making well rounded characters in such a small space. Very nice!

@Laurel Kornfeld But to be fair, the real interest of Brown's book is not this issue of nomenclature, but the fascinating story of the study of the remote bodies in the Kuiper Belt.

Pluto is not dead; Mike Brown tried but failed to "kill" it. The IAU demotion was done by only four percent of its members, most of whom are not planetary scientists. It was opposed by hundreds of planetary scientists in a formal petition led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto. Even Dr. Neil de Grasse Tyson admits the debate is ongoing. Significantly, in November 2010, astronomers discovered that Eris, the body Brown discovered along with Chad Trajillo and David Rabinowitz, is actually slightly smaller than Pluto. I encourage people to learn both sides of the issue. Some good pro-Pluto as a planet books are "Is Pluto A Planet?" by Dr. David Weintraub, "The Case for Pluto" by Alan Boyle, and my own book, hopefully out in 2011, "The Little Planet that Would Not Die: Pluto's Story."
